Marcos Daniel was born on July 4, 1978, in Passo Fundo, Brazil, where he also made his home throughout his playing career. He stands 180 cm tall and he is right-handed with a two-handed backhand.He started playing tennis at a very young age, often working as a ball boy at his brother's tennis academy, Daniel Tennis Center. His strong family bonds played a significant role in his career; his brother Márcio Daniel served as his coach and mentor.
Career
Daniel turned professional in 1997 and spent much of his early career competing on the ITF Futures and ATP Challenger circuits. He won 22 singles titles and 11 doubles titles at those levels, posting very strong clay-court records over several seasons.Daniel made his ATP main draw debut in 2000 and steadily improved, breaking into the ATP top 100 by 2006 and peaking at No. 56 in the world on September 14, 2009.
He reached the semifinals at the Swiss Open Gstaad (ATP 250) in both 2006 and 2009, which were among his best career results at Tour level. His best Grand Slam showing came at the 2008 French Open, where he reached the second round.
Daniel represented Brazil at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Injuries and retirements marked the latter part of his career, leading to his retirement in 2011.
