Raul Ramirez
Raul Ramirez is a former tennis player. Born on June 20, 1953, in Baja, California, Ramirez played actively from 1970 to the 1980s and was known as one of best all around tennis players of his time. He is also known for vein the first player to finish first in both singles and doubles Grand Prix standings which he accomplished in 1976. He attended and played collegiate tennis at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Ramirez turned pro in 1973 and three years later was already ranked at number 4 in the world, a career-high ranking which he established on November 7, 1976. He established his reputation as one of the best doubles winners of his time, spending 61 weeks at number 1 in doubles rankings. He also won 19 singles titles, including titles in the ATP Masters Series Events in Rome and in Monte Carlo. His last titles in singles include the victory in Caracas, Venezuela in 1982 and 1983. He also won a singles title in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1980 after defeating Phil Dent.
Victories in doubles include the victory at the 1976 Wimbledon, the 1975 and the 1977 French Open and the ATP Masters Series in Cincinnati in 1978. He also won other doubles titles in Canada, Monte Carlo, Paris, and Rome.
Ramirez married former Miss Universe Maritza Sayalero in 1981 and they live in Ensenada with their three children.
