Florian Mayer
Florian Mayer is a professional tennis player from Bayreuth, Germany, who was born on October 5, 1983. Mayer is best known for competing in the ATP Tour as well as the Challenger Tour in his current professional career.
Mayer plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand, and he was able to turn pro in 2001 after playing several years as an amateur. Although a constant and active tennis player, Mayer has not yet won career titles although he has reached three ATP singles finals. Two of these final rounds were in 2005 and 2006 at Sopot, and the other one was in Stockholm in 2010. During these competitions, he lost to Gael Monfils, Nikolay Davydenko and Roger Federer, respectively.
One thing that can be noted about Mayer is his rather unorthodox style of play where he uses a lot of different slices and spin when hitting on his backhand side. He also has a long backswing on his backhand and forehand as well.
Sometime in 2008, Mayer was sidelined by an injury which detained him from playing until 2009. However, he was able to make a superb comeback after his injury by reaching the final round of the Noumea Challenger.
So far, Mayer has a career record of 460-416, and is currently ranked at No. 31 in the world. The highest rank he has achieved was at No. 12, which he achieved on March 2015. Mayer also has not won a Grand Slam tournament, but has reached as far as the Quarter Finals of Wimbledon and US Open in singles. On the other hand, he has one Grand Slam title in doubles, which he own during the 2016 French Open.
