Rafael Nadal says his run to the final of the Indian Wells event has been a “big surprise” after working his way from a long-term knee injury.
The 11-time Grand Slam winner, who has slowly returned to tennis over the past month with Indian Wells representing his first hard court tournament since his comeback, defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5 to reach the final where he’ll take on Juan Martin del Potro.
“For me, it’s completely unexpected,” Nadal said.
“To be in the final … it’s a big surprise but I’m here and I’m very, very happy.”
Meanwhile, Berdych said he felt Nadal looked like the brilliant player he was prior to his injury.
“I think so. He was moving quite well,” the Czech said.
“Maybe he will say something different because it’s him, his body, and he has a feeling for that, but I think he looks strong again.”
