Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka extended her stunning start to 2012 with a 23rd consecutive victory clinching the Indian Wells title with a commanding 6-2 6-3 win over Mario Sharapova.
Swiss star Martina Hingis posted 37 straight victories way back in 1997 and now the Belarussian is eyeing off that record, as her form dazzles the entire tour. The win came in her sixth consecutive final.
Azarenka, who claimed her maiden grand slam in Melbourne, spoke about her upturn in form after the victory and said: “Last year was a learning experience for me. Every loss I analysed and step by step just built on everything, just daily hard work.
“I had a lot of tough losses last year and so now I’m really trying to turn it around in my own favour. I have just been trying to be consistent and professional every day. I never dreamed this would happen.”
She continued: “I never dreamed about that. It is amazing. It is a position I worked really hard to be in. I am so glad I am able to be consistent, disciplined and professional.”
Nevertheless, Azarenka admitted she still got nervous ahead of Sunday’s final where she again beat Sharapova, who she defeated in the decider in Melbourne.
“I was really nervous before the final,” Azarenka said. “It is important for me to try and put as much pressure on her and not let her into the match. I really had to stay on my feet and keep playing my game. It was a little hard with the wind but I am happy I went through with this determination.”
