Novak Djokovic proved that he is still running on full steam after winning the Rogers Cup on Sunday for his ninth win of the year. The 24 year old has previously won the Australian Open and Wimbledon and holds a record of 29-0 in the year, with the an overall record of 53-1. However, this is not the first time that he has won the Rogers Cup. Djokovic also won the cup in 2007.
“I am human – I can definitely assure you of that,” the winner said. “I guess it’s just all about having a positive attitude on the court every day, waking up every day wanting to improve, wanting to win, being determined, being professional. It’s that desire and motivation that keeps me going. Every match I play, I try to win, regardless which match is it or whoever is across the net.”
He won the title after defeating Mardy Fish with a final score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Fish, seeded at 6th, was the only player who won a set against Djokovic in the week. To his credit, Djokovic did not have it easy on his way to capturing the title, with Fish throwing out a mix of baselines and attacking serves. Djokovic looked uncomfortable at the start of the set and had to save six breakpoints to get past the first set.
“I put myself in a lot of positions to have chances,” Fish said. “I just didn’t execute on the big points.” However, Djokovic manged to recover in the final set with his near perfect serves.
“It was a close match, for sure,” Djokovic said. “A couple of points, one good return game in the third set, decided the winner. But it’s a final. I knew that he is not going to give me the match and the win. I knew that I have to fight for it.”
