In a statement that was emailed through the efforts of her agent, Serena Williams informed The Associated Press that she “re-tore the tendon” in her right foot, which was originally injured when she stepped on broken glass at a restaurant shortly after winning the Wimbledon.

Williams underwent surgery on Monday in New York City, but her foot had already received attention and initial repair on July 15.

Just two weeks before making her announcement, Serena’s older sister, Venus Williams also announced that she would not be playing anymore for the rest of the season. It was a left knee injury for her and wants to make sure she full recovers.

Supposedly both sisters were scheduled to play at the WTA Championships in Doha, Qatar. Unfortunately, they will also miss also the upcoming Fed Cup finals. venus williams

So far, Serena has missed a number of tours since July 3, when she was able to defeat Vera Zvonareva in a 6-3, 6-2 match. The victory at Wimbledon marked her fourth title as well as her 13th Grand Slam win.

According to her statement released on Tuesday, Williams said, “It is with deep frustration that I am withdrawing from the WTA Championships at Doha and the Fed Cup Final. Pushed by my desire to return to competition, I trained too hard too soon and re-tore the tendon in my foot. As a result, yesterday morning I had to have another procedure to repair it. I thank everyone for their continued support during this difficult time and look forward with strength and determination to get back on the court.”
