Williams released a statement to the Associated Press saying that she is “very disappointed to announce that I will be unable to play.” With the WTA Tour Championships by the end of October and the Fed Cup final between Italy and the United States in November, Williams will be missing some big events for this year’s season.

Williams adds, “I have been getting treatment and therapy on my knee and have been making progress, but unfortunately must continue to keep weight off my knee for the short term and won’t be ready to return to competition in 2010… I am looking forward to returning to full health in time for the start of the 2011 season and hopefully having the opportunity to play in both the Fed Cup and WTA Championships next year.”

Currently, Williams is seated at the No. 3 spot as of this week’s WTA rankings. She ends this season with a 38-7 record with two titles in singles, as well as a record of 18-1 and three titles in doubles. Despite her injury, Williams has earned more than $2.5 million in prize money as she exits for the rest of the season.
