On Friday, Serena Williams announced her withdrawal from the U.S. Open because she is still recovering from the surgery that was done to repair the cuts located on her right foot.serena williams

So far, Williams sits among the top ranks and has previously won three times at Flushing Meadows. These three are a part of her current 13 Grand Slam titles in women’s singles, and is considered the most titles achieved by active female tennis players. Last year, she was knocked off the running for the title when she went on a tirade against a line judge over a foot-fault call. Williams’ outburst then result in a record fine.

In a statement released by her publicist, Williams stated, “It is with much frustration and deep sadness that I am having to pull out of the U.S. Open.”

As it is, Williams has been advised not to play in the tournament so that her foot will be able to fully heal. Following doctors, Williams withdrew from the event, calling it “one of the most devastating moments of my career.”

The right foot cuts were a result of an accident when Williams got hurt by a broken glass while dining at a restaurant in Munich. This was shortly after her victory at the women’s singles in Wimbledon, but before playing in a exhibition match in Brussels against Kim Clijsters.
