Roger Federer is victorious at the Madrid Open, gaining himself a much needed win over Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-4 win.
This is the Swiss player’s first title of the year and ends his 5 time championship play loosing streak against his long time tennis Rival. It is also the first time that Federer has won against Nadal in a Master’s Tournament since 2007.
Ecstatic over this win, Federer said, ” I’m very happy to have won, but I’d like to congratulate Rafa as he’s had such a great run on clay,” Federer said. “I’m sorry to have spoilt the party here.” He also referred to his win over Nadal as “very satisfying”.
Nadal was the odds-on favorite going into the Madrid Open championship games. It was played on hard clay, which is Nadal’s preferred surface. In total he has only lost 5 times out of over 150 matches on that type of surface. The Spanish player, however, seemed sluggish against Federer.
After the game, Nadal had this to say, “To me, this tournament has nothing to do with Paris. This tournament is practically another surface compared to Paris,” said Nadal. “The conditions favored him more than me.” He also added “There are no positives, there is little to analyze. He broke and broke and I went home.”
