Who’s On the Top After the Australian Open?

Serena Williams now holds the No 1 rank in professional tennis after her victory at the Australian Open.

Serena Williams now holds the No 1 rank in professional tennis after her victory at the Australian Open. This is insofar her third time in the history of her career. Her first one was in July 2002 where she maintained her top position for more than a year. She also had an additional 4 weeks as number 1 when she won the U.S. Open in 2008.Serena>

With Serena’s win over Dinara Safina, she wasn’t practically keen to becoming America’s number 1 female tennis player. The idea of becoming number one was a remote idea until fans greeted her with the success.

Safina now earned her top 2 spot when Jelena Jankovic went down to number 3 from number 1.

On the other hand, Fernando Verdasco, at last, advanced to the top ten after he was successful in the Australian Open semifinals. Critiques expressed that Verdasco could have quickly improved from his 12th ranking several days ago if he got more points as to the length of time he played on the courts. He failed to maximize his 5-hour and 14-minute sets to top seed Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.

Rafael Nadal evidently took his lead against Swiss player Roger Federer when Nadal gained a five-set win against Federer. As per ATP record, Nadal is 3,000 points ahead from Federer.

The Spanish player will be in his 25th week being at the top position starting next week.
