It’s the eight doubles title for Serena and Venus Williams as they beat Daniela Hantuchova (Slovakia) and Ai Sugiyama (Japan) 6-3, 6-3, Friday at the Australian Open. The sisters, who revealed even more heightened power and speed in their play, shot amazing returns and showed brilliant movement in the court, ending the first set to their advantage in less than thirty-eight (38) minutes. It was clear that the succeeding sets were theirs to claim, as they broke Sugiyama’s serve and dominated over Hantuchova later in the game.>
The sisters also hold the title as champions for women’s tennis, doubles category, in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and are considered one of the best doubles teams in tennis history. This is their third Australian Open doubles title; their first win was in 2001, their second in 2003.
The power siblings are ecstatic to compete, and win, alongside each other for the eighth time. Venus says of her younger sister, “I’d like to thank Serena for being the best partner; I wouldn’t want to play with anyone else. She’s amazing.” The sisters affectionately chatted with each other, as they made their way out of the Rod Laver Arena, their trophies in hand.
Serena Williams is currently world’s no. 2 in the rankings while sister Venus is at no. 6.
