Dummy

rules

The term "dummy" is used in football to denote a footballer deceiving the opposition into believing that he is going to pass, shoot or receive the ball but does something wholly different, thus gaining an advantage.

For example, when the ball is passed to the player, instead of receiving it he might let it run under him onto his teammate. This is a commonly carried out dummy. Dummies are often performed during set-pieces. For example, during a free-kick, a player might run towards the ball revealing that he is going to take the free-kick. But he might just run towards the ball and not hit it and leave it for his teammate to hit the ball.
