New Maradona or New Diego is a commonly used term in football to define a promising and talented young footballer to Argentina in reference to the Argentine legend Diego Armando Maradona. This term is bestowed on those Argentine footballers who are noted to be very promising. The Argentine press and media draw comparisons between Maradona and this promising player, who is usually a striker, winger or attacking midfielder.
Originally it was Diego Latorre who was said to be the New Maradona. Since then a number of top draw Argentine footballers have been slated s the New Maradona. The likes of Ariel Ortega, Pablo Aimar, Gabriel Omar Batistuta and Javier Pedro Saviola all had been said to be the "New Maradona" early on in their career. But none of them could live up to the expectations.
In recent years, Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero and FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi have been labeled as the "New Maradona". Both are very talented players and both are full Argentine international players.
