SM Caen

Stade Malherbe de Caen is a French football club based in the city of Caen, Normandy. They currently feature in the French Ligue 1 and are named after Francois de Malherbe, a poet, critic and translater who hailed from Caen and used to live during the 16th and 17th centuries.

SM Caen were established in 1913. In the 2003-2004 season, they finished second in the French Ligue 2 and were promoted to the French Ligue 1. But they were relegated from the French top flight at the end of the 2004-2005 season but did feature in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue for the maiden time in their history, losing to Strasboug in the final.

SM Caen gained promotion again to the Ligue 1 at the end of the 2006-2007 season.

SM Caen play their home matches at the Stade Michel d’Ornano that has a capacity of 21,500.
