Frankfurt Galaxy
An American football team, the Frankfurt Galaxy> was based in Frankfurt. Initially a part of the World League of American Football (WLAF) the team later shifted to NFL Europe. They played their home matches at the Commerzbank-Arena, previously known as the Waldstadion. It was known as the oldest proficient football team prior to it getting folded.
The Frankfurt Galaxy was a founding member of WLAF. The team hosted the first ever WLAF match at the Waldstadion against the London Monarchs on March 23, 199. During the match, the Galaxy scored the first ever points in the WLAF history with a safety, but were defeated by the Monarchs. . The Frankfurt Galaxy, the Barcelona Dragons and the Monarchs were on the previous teams to continue playing when the World League was resumed in 1995. The Frankfurt Galaxy won the World Bowl title four times in the years 1995, 1999, 2003 as well as 2006. They were unable to defend it in 1996, 1998, 2004, and also 2007.
Some of the notable players to represent the Frankfurt Galaxy were Daniel Benetka, Mark Dixon, Jake Delhomme, Werner Hippler, Ralf Kleinmann, Corey Ivy, and Pat Barnes. Jack Elway, Ernie Stautner, Dick Curl, Doug Graber and Mike Jones were the head coaches of the Frankfurt Galaxy respectively.
