This club at present plays in Football League Two, which is the fourth tier of English football. Even though being the fourth oldest Football League club in England, the team has spent most of the times in the lower divisions of the English League. Having joined in the Football league in 1899-1900 season, they failed to join the league in 1908-09. In 1922, the team was the founder members of the Football League Third Division North in 1921-22. Since then, they have remained in this League.

The present manager of the team is John Sheridan, who has been given a three year contract in 2009. Tommy Wright is his assistant. Nicknamed as the ‘Spireites’, the chairman of the team is Barrie Sheridan.

=== Major Achievements ===

The Chesterfield Football Club were the champions of the Midland Football League in 1909-10 and in 1919-20. They were the Third Division (North) Champions (1930-31 and in 1935-36), the Third Division Play Off Winners in 1994-95 and also the Fourth Division Champions (Presently known as Football League Two) in 1969-70 and in 1984-85 respectively.

Other than that, the team was the Anglo-Scottish Cup winners in 1980-81 and also the Derbyshire F.A. Centenary Cup winners in 1994-95, 2000-01, 2001-02 and in 2009-10.

With right to Minor Honors, the team is the Bass Charity Vase Winners in 1900-01 and the Derbyshire F.A. Senior Cup winners in 1898-99, 1920-21, 1921-22, 1924-25, 1932-33 and in 1936-3. Moreover, the team was the Banner Jones Middleton Cup winners in 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and in 2009-10.
