The Indonesia national football team represents Indonesia in international football. This team is controlled by the Football Association of Indonesia. Nicknamed as Garuda Merah Putih, (the Reds and Whites), the head coach of the team is Alfred Riedl with Widodo C Putro being the assistant coach of the team. Charis Yulianto is the captain of this team. Bambang Pamungkas made the maximum caps of 72 and around 36 goals. The home stadium of this team is Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Even though football is considered as one of the favorite sports of the nation, Indonesia is not among the strongest teams in the AFC. But, the team is known as one of the strongest team in Southeast Asia along with Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. This team competed as the Dutch East Indies national football team prior to independence in 1945.
This team was the first Asian team to have participated in the World Cup when they were qualified to the 1938 tournament under the name, Dutch East Indies.
Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta is the home stadium of Indonesia. Having a capacity of around 88,000, the stadium has been renovated to 105,000 audience capacity. Considered as the largest stadium in Indonesia, it is also the largest in South East Asia. Built in 1960 for the Asian Games, the stadium is the home stadium for the football team till date.
From 2000 to 2009, Indonesia played in around 82 games, of which they won 36 of them, with 16 draws and 30 losses. In 1990s, the team played in 100 games, winning 36 of them, drawing 21 and losing 43. In 1980s, they played in 133 games, losing 60, drawing 31 and winning 42 of them.
