Club Gimnasia y Esgrima is based out of the Mendoza province in Argentina and is part of the regionalised third division of Argentine football, the Torneo Argentino A. The team has been quite succesful in the Primera divisions of Argentina where they played 121 games scoring 122 points. These 122 points ensured that Club Gimnasia y Esgrima are at rank 36 across Argentina in the list of most succesful clubs. In Mendoza, they are, undoubtedly, the most succesful club ever. Through the 70s and in the early 80s, the team spent most of the time in the top division. There best run was in 1984 when the team reached the second round of the championship but were beaten 5-3 by Argentinos Juniors, over two-legs.

Juan Gilberto Funes was one the stars that year as well as Mario Videla, who was the main man a year before that. Many more players provided ample support to these two famous legends of Gimnasia y Esgrima.
