Born on February 21, 1974, Gilbert Agius is a Maltese soccer player who is a midfielder for the Maltese Football League Side Valleta. Known as one of the most respected football players in Maltese football history, Agius has played for his hometown club since 1990, a decision that has earned him the respect and admiration of soccer fans. He is known as one of the best strikers on the team and one of the players who can bring the most number of goals and assists in each season. Agius has also won the n highest number of M.F. A. Player of the Year awards than any other player. He won the first award during the 96/97 season, the second during the 00/01 season and the third on the 06/07 season.
He started the 07/08 season on trial for Enköpings SK before making the final decision to stay with Valleta. However, he had to sit out the rest of 2007 after he suffered a thigh injury that left him unable to play until he returned just in time to lead the team to its first title since the 00/01 season. He was awarded a single Player of the Month award and was also chosen as the Best Local Player by the Malta Football Awards.
Agius has achieved a remarkable 111 caps for his country, a feat that has included him to a select group of soccer players who have achieved this feat. His on the running for beating the record number of caps at 121 held by David Carabott.
