Diego Alberto Cervantes Chavez, a Mexican football defender, began playing professional football in 2005, with Club America, a top division club in Mexico. But even before he began playing for the senior team Chavez was loaned to San Luis F.C., an affiliate of Club America at the time. The defender went on to participate in San Luis’ rise to the first division after the Clausura 2005 season, and soon found himself transferred back to Club America, just in time for the Apertura 2005 season.

Chavez made his debut for the club in October 2005, in a match against arch rivals, UNAM Pumas. Chavez started the game with some other reserves, owing to the fact that the usual starters were suffering from fatigue due to a match played earlier in the same week in the Copa Sudamericana. Keeping up his good form, the footballer managed to impress the media and fans alike by aiding the team’s 2-1 victory.

During the following regular season, Chavez only got one opportunity to showcase his skill, in a match against Atlante F.C., and also against his brother Horacio Cervantes, who is a defender with the club. Making the most of this chance, Chavez once again helped the team claim a 4-3 victory against Atlante

However, things soon took a turn for the worst for the talented footballer, when during the Apertura 2005 playoffs, Diego was called in to substitute in a match against UANL Tigers, during the second half of the quarterfinals. Club America had been leading with the best record in the league, but they lost this match 4-1, and found themselves eliminated from the tournament in an embarrassing manner. Chavez and team coach Mario Carrillo found themselves at the receiving end of extreme criticism from fans and the press, which eventually resulted in the coach losing his job, and Chaves being relegated to the bench by subsequent managers, Manuel Lapuente and Victor Manuel Aguado.

With a weakened defense, the team roster was revised, resulting in Chavez being loaned to San Luis in 2008. In the Clausura 2009 season, Chavez was loaned to Necaxa, where even though he managed to score three goals, the team was relegated to Liga de Ascenso. Even as he returned to Club America in June, 2009 the club made arrangements to have him transferred to Atlante F.C. the very next month.

Chavez remained with Atlante F.C. till the end of 2009, and at the start of the next year, was loaned to CF Monterrey by Club America for the 2010-11 season.
