Jose Maria Cardenas Lopez is a professional Mexican football player who specializes in playing as a forward or striker. In 2005, Cardenas made his way into the first team squad at Atlante F.C. where he would remain a backup for a majority of the first season at the club. However, from his second season onwards, some spectacular performances as a substitute made sure that Cardenas was soon to become a regular in the team.

Although Cardenas never really scored too many goals, he was always there and thereabouts with his performances, setting up many for his teammates. In his 70 appearances for Atlante, Cardenas had 5 goals to his name although he was definitely better off in the cup matches. The highlight of his time at Atlante was the Apertura title that he helped the team win in 2007. At the end of the 2008 season, Cardenas would leave Atlante for F.C. Pachuca. A regular in the first team in his time at Pachuca, Cardenas scored 4 goals in 31 appearances for the team.

His performances for Pachuca got him into the Mexican national team for a friendly game against Bolivia. Cardenas scored on his international debut and since then, has been on the brink of earning a regular place in the team. In 2009, he moved to Santos Laguna to continue playing at the highest level of Mexican football.
