Massimo Donati commenced his professional club football career at Atalanta in 1999 and played for them until 2001. In 2001 Donati was signed by Milan and although he was on their books until 2007, he could make only 17 league appearances.
In 2007 Donati was signed by Scottish giants Celtic and he played for them for two seasons, scoring 3 goals in 31 league appearances. In 2009 he was signed by Bari.
