Cristian Eugen Chivu is a Romanian footballer who currently features for the Italian giants Inter Milan. Chivu plays at centre-back and is reputed to be one of the best central defenders in the world.
Chivu started his playing career at Romanian side CSM Resita in 1996 and was signed by Dutch giants AFC Ajax in 1999. He featured in 107 matches for Ajax until 2003 and was rated as one of the best young players in the world. He also skippered Ajax.
AS Roma signed Chivu in the summer of 2003 for a reported 18 million euros. Chivu was the rock for Roma at the back and played in 102 matches. He was signed by Inter Milan at the start of the 2007-2008 season for 16 million euros and settled himself easily at the heart of the Inter Milan defence and won the Scudetto with the Nerazzurri.
Chivu went on to win the Serie A title again in 2008-09 and played an important role in Inter’s treble-winning season in 2009-10. He was adjudged as the Romanian Footballer of the Year in 2000, 2002, 2009 and 2010.
Chivu made his international debut for Romania in 1999. He went on to become his team’s captain and scored three goals in 75 matches before hanging up his boots in 2011.
