A professional football player, Hugo Alberto Barrientos is an Argentine midfielder. His playing career started in 1994 where he joined C.A.I., a team for youth players, in the lowest division in Argentina. He played with C.A.I. for 7 seasons and moved to Atletico de Rafaela in 2000, to play in the Primera B Nacional division. He won the 2002-03 championship with Atletico de Rafaela and helped the team move up to the Primera Division.

In 2004, Atletico de Rafaela got relegated but strong performances by Barrientos meant that he stayed back in the top-flight to play for Olimpo de Bahia Blanca. A year later, he moved to Insituto de Cordoba, still in top-flight. He finally got a complete season with Instituto de Cordoba after he played 35-odd games with the team, scoring once, in the 2005-06 season.

In 2006, Barrientos made the move to Atletico Huracan but has failed to break into the first team ever since.
