A Chilean footballer, Waldo Alonso Ponce Carrizo began his career at Universidad de Chile in 2002. He played a long season at Universidad and performed admirably enough to get a call from VFL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga. He went to Germany for two seasons but barely saw any playing time and thus, returned to his former club for three more seasons. In 2005, Universidad de Chile reached the final of the Clausura tournament but the match went to penalties and Ponce missed the last and most crucial penalty for his side.
In 2008, Ponce came to Argentina to play for Velez Sarsfield but suffered numerous injuries in his first year. However, after teammate Hernan Pellerano left the club, he became more regular in the team and has become an integral part as well.
At the international level, Ponce has been a part of the national squad since 2006 and has scored a solitary goal against Paraguay.
