Born in Argentina, Anibal Matellan is a professional footballer who started his career at one of the biggest clubs in the country in 1996, Boca Juniors. With Boca, Anibal won as many as 6 major titles in 5 seasons. These included three Primera Division Championship wins, two Copa Libertadores titles and 1 Intercontinental Cup. His exploits with Boca got him a chance to travel to Europe to play with FC Schalke in the German Bundesliga. Although Schalke did not win the league, they did manage to win the German Cup.
In his three years at the club, Anibal won 30-odd caps and scored a solitary goal before choosing to return back to his native country and the club that got him everything. So Anibal was back at Boca in 2004 but this time, things weren’t as rosy as before. Just 15 games in the season led to an exit to Spain and Getafe. After 22 games for Getafe, Anibal moved to Gimnastic for a season before returning home to Arsenal de Sarandi. His return was just in time as he helped Arsenal complete the wonderful win in the Copa Sudamericana. Anibal scored in the final game to give his side the 3-2 lead, heading into the second leg against Club America.
