A professional football player from Brazil, Edilson Mendes Guimaraes plays as a defender in the right-back position. Edilson began his playing career in 2002, when he was picked up by the youth academy at Avai Futebol Clube. In 2004, while he was still a part of the youth academy, Edilson made his first team debut for Avai and until the end of 2005, he played for the first team as well as the youth academy.

In 2005, he moved to Vitoria Esporte Clube and helped the team win the Bahia State Championships before moving onto Atletico Mineiro in 2006. However, this would signal the beginning of an un-settled phase for Edilson as a football player. He moved to Avai Futebol Clube towards the second half of 2006 where he got severely injured.

In 2008, Edilson returned to professional football after spending the entire 2007 season recuperating from his injury and signed up with Veranopolis Esporte Clube in 2008. The same year, he would move to Guarani Futebol Clube and Ponte Preta before moving to Joinville and finally ending the year at Gremio Esportivo Juventus. He never really settled down at any club as the after-effects of the injury still prevented Edilson from playing freely.

However, by 2009, he had found his rhythm again, signing with Ponte Preta and becoming a part of their starting line-up for 2009 and 2010. His league appearances remained lesser than the state-league and cup games, but he managed to move to Gremio in 2010, thanks to some strong performances. In 2011, Gremio decided to send Edilson on a loan move to Atletico Paranaense, where he played 18 games during his tenure so far.
