Since 1999, he has played in the Paraguayan national team, being the part of the team in 2002, 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup finals.

Cáceres made his international debut in 2002 against England national team. So far, he has made 30 caps and scored 4 goals for the Paraguay national football team. He has participated exceptionally in both 2002 and in 2006 FIFA World Cup matches. In 2005, he scored the third goal of the Paraguay team defeating Bolivia by 4-1 at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco in the South American qualification match for the 2006 World Cup. By 2007, he played in the Copa America team too. For Paraguay team, Julio has played 7 matches in the South American qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

=== Career Highlights ===

Whilst with the Olimpia team, Julio and his team won at the Paraguayan Primera División twice, in 1999 and in 2000. The team won the Copa Libertadores in 2002 and the Recopa Sudamericana in 2003.

When playing for Boca Juniors, Julio and his team won the Recopa Sudamericana in 2008 and the Argentine Primera División in 2008 Apertura.

Atlético Mineiro selected Julio and during his time with the team, they won the Campeonato Mineiro in 2010.
