As part of the Buenos Aires Area’s football leagues, the Primera D Metropolitana forms the regionalized fifth division in the Argentine Football Association’s football league structure. The league is made up of 18 clubs and is at par with the Torneo Argentino C division.

The division was setup in 1974 after the amateur league, or Aficionados league, became defunct in 1973.

The league follows a simple format where the winner gains direct promotion into the Primera C Metropolitana division. Teams that finish between 2nd & 6th, are involved in a playoff where the winner of the playoff faces the second bottom team from the Primera C Metropolitana division.

The relegation process is simple and the team that finishes bottom of the league is ousted at the end of the season. Since it is the lowest division and there are no lower levels to drop to, the lowest team is not allowed to participate in the league, the following season.
