FA Cup semi-final weekend and I’m surprised Wigan are not a shorter price to get the job done inside 90 minutes versus Millwall.
It’s unlikely that either side will be lifting the trophy, with Chelsea or Manchester City awaiting the winners in the final, but you just never know and the Premier League club must be fancied to advance.
It has been yet another season when Wigan gave themselves plenty to do at the turn of the year in the Premier League and manager Roberto Martinez must be wondering why.
Time and again the Latics are in a relegation battle before rallying strongly when their top flight status is threatened and this term has been no different.
Wigan are by no means safe but Martinez’s men have picked up 10 points from their last five matches and a similar return over the next month would certainly be enough to survive.
The draw at QPR on Sunday could prove crucial, Shaun Maloney salvaging a share of the spoils in injury time at Loftus Road, and there must be plenty of confidence in the squad right now.
Wigan have been terrific in the FA Cup this season, the highlight their fabulous 3-0 triumph at Everton in the last eight.
Bournemouth, Macclesfield and Huddersfield had been dispatched prior to that and Millwall will hold no fears at Wembley.
The Championship club face Premier League opposition for the second time in this season’s competition, having beaten Aston Villa in round four, but they have struggled for goals of late and are not safe themselves just yet.
Currently sixteenth in the second tier, Millwall are winless in three matches and have found the net only six times in their previous nine games in all competitions.
Of course I expect the Lions to raise their game on the big occasion but Wigan can be irresistible on their day and the excellent, large playing surface at Wembley should suit their style, too.
2pts Back Wigan (vs. Millwall) @ 1.85 (Bet 365)
