Manchester City have saved their reputation after beating Chelsea 2-0 at home in the English Premier League.
The defending champions’ dominant display was rewarded with second-half field goals. Both of which were very good exhibiting the real quality that the team possess. The goals came from stalky midfielder Yaya Toure and substitute striker Carlos Tevez.
The Ivorian’s 63rd-minute opener was a right footed finesse into the right corner after some cheeky quick feet by David Silva.
This goal came shortly after Joe Hart had made clumsy challenge in the box, giving Frank Lampard a chance to put his team ahead from the spot. Hart made a great diving save to his right, denying Lampard from the spot.
The Argentine striker who came on a substitute wrapped up the win five minutes from time with a bullet that fizzed past Petr Cech. The win has now reduced the gap between Manchester United and Manchester City to 12 points.
Cech made quite a few good saves throughout the game keeping his team alive on various occasions.
When former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo was sacked Chelsea were four points behind the leaders and are now trailing by a whopping 19 points.
City had quite a few fouls registered in this game, which was shocking as they were the dominant force throughout, the first half ended with them on 12 fouls to Chelsea’s two.
Demba Ba returned to the side in getting a starting spot in place of Spanish international Fernando Torres. Unfortunately, Ba did not have a huge impact on the game.
Overall, it was quite a scrappy game from the visitors, whose heads dropped after the veteran Lampard’s penalty was saved. This result gives Tottenham a chance to leap above Chelsea in third when they play their league game against West Ham United on Monday night.
The fight for the European spots is wide open.
