Wenger 'Not Embarrassed' By Cup Exit

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he’s more “disappointed and frustrated” than embarrassed after the Gunners crashed out of the League Cup on Tuesday following a penalty shootout defeat to fourth tier Bradford City.

The Gunners went down 3-2 on penalties after the game had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes. Arsenal had been trailing before Thomas Vermaelen netted a crucial 86th minute equaliser but in the end it meant little.

The result means Arsenal miss another chance to end their silverware drought but Wenger insisted he wasn’t embarrassed despite fielding a strong side for the quarter-final.

“We did absolutely everything for 120 minutes and you have to give credit to Bradford,” Wenger said.

“You feel embarrassed when you don’t give everything, I think they’ll be more disappointed and frustrated.”

The Frenchman added: “I don’t think there’s any psychological problem with the players when it comes to knockout ties. I don’t think it’s a lack of quality.

“We will get over this - it is part of our job - and focus on the next game.”
