A win for Porto on Tuesday would take them into the last 16 of the Champions League and they might just get it in Kiev.
Having won all three of their opening fixtures in Europe’s premier club competition, the Portuguese side are virtually assured of their place in the knockout stage already but they’ll want it secured as soon as possible and victory in the Ukrainian capital is certainly not beyond them.
Porto started their campaign with a 2-0 win in Zagreb but Dinamo are the group’s whipping boys and their victory over PSG next time out was certainly more impressive.
James Rodriguez’s late strike was the only goal of the game on matchday 2 but Porto followed that success with another home triumph, this time 3-2 over Tuesday’s opponents, and they usually score goals for fun.
Unbeaten this season, winning ten of their twelve matches, Porto represent a real test for even Europe’s best and they will have fond memories of Ukraine having won 2-0 in Donetsk against Shakhtar this time last season.
It is now just two defeats in their previous 84 league games, incredibly, after another fine start to the campaign but the same certainly cannot be said of Kiev.
Thrashed 4-1 in Paris by PSG, in addition to that reversal in Oporto, Kiev are really up against it to qualify with three fixtures remaining and the best they can probably hope for is a post-Christmas place in the Europa League.
Veteran coach Oleg Blokhin has seen his side win just six of their last 16 matches, losing half of those fixtures, and I’ve no doubt that Porto are the better side anyway.
