Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp says his side’s 2-1 victory over Spanish champions Real Madrid is what “dreams are made of”.
The German champions triumphed over Real, after Robert Lewandowski fired them into a first-half lead with a near-post finish on 36 minutes, before Cristiano Ronaldo lobbed home two minutes later to equalise.
Marcel Schmelzer hit the winner on 64 minutes after a loose ball fell to him and he swept it home with a neat volley.
“The feeling is amazing; it was a sensational evening for us and truly the stuff dreams are made of,” Klopp told reporters after the game.
“It was not a perfect match, but in terms of passion and fighting spirit it was quite close.”
The result sees Dortmund, who lost on the weekend in the Bundesliga to rivals Schalke, go top of Group D on seven points, ahead of Real on six, Ajax Amsterdam on four and Manchester City struggling with just one point.
“This game will give my players a confidence boost. They have been criticised a lot in recent weeks,” Klopp said.
“If anyone doubted the character of my team, then they have lost all my respect. We always want to play well but unfortunately it’s not always possible to play like we did today.”
Real boss Jose Mourinho added: “We can’t be satisfied with this, but it isn’t a drama. We’ve lost a game, but the consequences aren’t dramatic. We are second in the standings.
“We have six points and have two games to play at home. Achieving the necessary points to advance is within our grasp.”
