Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes says his side’s 5-0 away victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf was their best performance of the season as they made it a record eight wins from eight matches.
Mario Mandzukic and Luiz Gustavo got Bayern off to a bright start, before Thomas Muller grabbed a double and Rafinha rounded out the win which was even more significant as champions Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 to Schalke.
“That was our best display of the season so far. Every player is there to cover for another,” Heynckes said.
“All my players went over to celebrate with Rafinha when he scored. That reflects the spirit within the team.“
The result maintained up a five-point gap between Bayern (who have scored 26 goals and conceded just two) and second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt who defeated Hannover 96, while Dortmund are way back on 12 points.
Heynckes added: “Naturally, I’m very satisfied: From the first minute until the last, we played outstanding football in front of a fantastic crowd.
“Even more importantly, we kept it really tight in defence and made no mistakes. You can’t relax for a single moment in a game like this, you have to stay focused the entire time – and that’s what we did.”
