Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi says his side were “worthy winners” after a hard-fought 2-0 victory on the road over Benfica in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday evening.
The Spanish giants were made to work for the three points, with Messi providing assists for both goals from Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas either side of half-time.
“Benfica had some chances, but we were worthy winners,” the Argentine said. “Now we’re going to continue working to qualify and to reach the next stage.”
Messi played down his own heroics despite brilliantly creating both goals.
“I was happy to be the source of both the goals but what interests me most is the victory and getting three more precious points,” he said.
He added: “We played a great game tonight in a stadium where it’s very difficult to play. Benfica are a very good team and made our job difficult. We still managed to impose our game, and created a lot of goalscoring opportunities.”
