Argentine legend Diego Maradona has been sacked by UAE outfit Al Wasl after an underwhelming first season in charge of the club.
The former Argentina national team coach was dismissed on Tuesday evening following a trophyless season, having signed with the club in May last year on a two-year contract.
An Al Wasl statement read: “Following a meeting held by the board of directors of Al Wasl Football Company held today [Tuesday], to evaluate the technical staff of Al Wasl Football Team under the leadership of coach Diego Maradona, it was decided to terminate the services of coach Diego Maradona and his technical staff.”
Maradona’s side finished eighth in the Pro-League last term, while they crashed out of both the President’s Cup and Emirates Cup in the quarter-finals stages.
The Argentine also saw his side blow a 3-1 first-leg lead against Al Muharraq in the Gulf Clubs Championships final to lose on penalties in the second leg.
