The European Champions League final is on this weekend with plenty of attention focused on that game, while there’s a few cup finals and a French Ligue 1 title decider elsewhere.
Sports Pundit’s Game of the Weekend
Uefa Champions League final, Saturday 8.45pm (CET)
The German giants play host to the decider in Munich with Chelsea the big underdogs on the road. The Blues are without skipper John Terry in a blow to their hopes, especially considering the firepower Bayern possess in the likes of Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez in attack. Chelsea will be hoping to exercise their pain from four years ago when they lost the final on penalties while Bayern would love a fairytale home triumph.
English Championship promotion playoff, Saturday 4pm (CET)
The game dubbed the “richest match in world football” takes place on Saturday evening with the Tangerines and Hammers both battling it out for an instant return to the top flight. Sam Allardcye’s Hammers finished third and are the favourites for this contest, but Ian Holloway is a shrewd boss who has been here before and anything can happen in a match like this with so much at stake.
Scottish Cup final, Saturday 4pm (CET)
Usually the Scottish Cup finals are played between the country’s Glasgow rivals, but this term it’s a rare Edinburgh derby in the decider. Hearts and Hibernian will play it out for some rare silverware at Glasgow’s Hampden Park with Celtic and Rangers both crashing out earlier in the competition.
Coppa Italia final, Sunday 9pm (CET)
Juventus will aim to complete a rare domestic double when they take on Napoli in the Coppa Italia final on Sunday evening. Antonio Conte has had a dream season with Juve and this would cap it off, while Alessandro Del Piero will leave the Old Lady after this game, so it could be the dream send-off for him. Napoli, on the flipside, failed in their bid to qualify for the Champions League this term, so a positive result here would be a good finish to their season.
French Ligue 1, Sunday 9pm (CET)
Montpellier can complete a rare European miracle, to become domestic champions in France with any result away to relegated Auxerre being enough. When you compare the modest Montpellier with the riches of second-placed PSG, you begin to realise how remarkable their season has been. Montpellier hold a three-point lead from PSG, who go to Lorient on Sunday too.
