Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini remains cautious about his side’s Premier League title charge despite taking a giant stride towards glory with a 2-0 win away Newcastle on Sunday.
The Sky Blues now face QPR on the final day of the season at Etihad Stadium, with victory enough for them to win the English title ahead of Manchester United, who are currently level on points with them, but with a vastly inferior goal difference.
QPR are battling the drop and City are expected to be far too good for them, and Mancini conceded they were now favourites for the title, having said it was all over with United set to win it a few weeks ago when they trailed by eight points.
“Maybe we are the favourites now. But, in one game, things can change,” Mancini said.
“We should keep our concentration like we have done the last five weeks. I’m excited because we are top, but it’s not enough. If we play like we did here I think we have a fantastic chance to be champions.”
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said the fact QPR were battling relegation might make the contest tricky for City, while United go to midtable Sunderland.
And Mancini agreed, when he said: “We’ve still got a difficult game against QPR on the last day. At least it doesn’t depend on Manchester United anymore, it depends on us, but we have another game.
“It won’t be easy because QPR are fighting against relegation. If we think we have won the Championship it will be a big mistake.
“All the players have to keep their feet on the floor. I cannot talk about what it would mean to win the title, not until next week.”
