Real Madrid move a step closer to the Spanish La Liga title with a hard-fought 3-0 win over Sevilla which assistant manager Aitor Karanka says showed they deserved to win the league after overcoming fatigue.
Just days after their midweek Uefa Champions League exit and last weekend’s El Clasico victory, Real required a first-half Cristiano Ronaldo strike and a second-half Karim Benzema double to seal the three points which them within a win of the title.
“I’ll say it again: this team deserves to win the title. Regardless of winning the league title or not, these players have the character and mentality of champions,” Karanka said.
“They were tired and sad today, and we could have played better, but we won. We did what we had to do.”
Real will now face Athletic Bilbao (midweek), Granada and Mallorca in their final three games.
“There are now fewer games left [three] and we had to win today after Wednesday’s upset,” Karanka said.
He added: “It’s obviously important to win the Spanish league for everything it entails and for how hard we’ve worked for it. The sooner we win, the better, really.
“But it would be nice to win at a great venue like San Mames against Athletic Bilbao because they are having a great season. We’re all only thinking about winning the game we need to celebrate as soon as possible.”
