EPL 2011-12: Manchester United beat Blackburn Rovers to go five points clear

English Premier League’s defending champions Manchester United moved another step closer to second consecutive title with their 2-0 win over relegation fighters Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

English Premier League’s defending champions Manchester United moved another step closer to second consecutive title with their 2-0 win over relegation fighters Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

The result takes United five points clear at the top of the table ahead of arch-rivals Manchester City in second place. City were expected to make a comeback this weekend but managed only a 3-3 draw against Sunderland, thus putting United in the driving seat to increase the gap between the top two.

The victory secured by the Red Devils over the Rovers did not come easily. The visitors struggled initially as Wayne Rooney was made to play on the left flank by manager Sir Alex Ferguson. It was only after Ryan Giggs’ introduction at the hour-mark that United’s attack opened up.

Blackburn, though outside the drop zone currently, were all set for a 0-0 draw as even a point against the league table leaders would be precious for them in avoiding relegation. Steve Kean’s men had forced United goalkeeper David De’ Gea to make three excellent saves in the first half and deserved a point. But it wasn’t their day at Ewood Park.

United broke the deadlock through a stunning goal by in-form winger Antonio Valencia in the 81st minute. And substitute Ashley Young added another goal in the 86th minute to seal the game for United.

The partnership of Jonny Evans and former England captain Rio Ferdinand help Alex Ferguson’s men to put in another decent performance in the defence. While the presence of veteran Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick in midfield kept United’s hopes of clinching all three points alive.

The victory takes United more closer to a record 20th league title and almost puts an end to Manchester City’s bid for the crown.
