Arsenal fans will be rejoicing after Gunners manager Arsene Wenger admitted he wants to add quality to his squad with players like Lukas Podolski.
For a long time, Arsenal supporters have been wondering why the Frenchman doesnât boost the squad. Itâs long been the pain. An over-reliance on a few players has proven costly.
And more pertinently, when big names like Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri departed they were never replaced. Okay, Wenger brought in the likes of Mikel Arteta, Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker in August, but it was all hasty.
The club has rarely gone out and bought proven stars. However Arsenalâs reported pursuit of the Germany international has prompted much discussion and finally Wenger has admitted he wants to add some cavalry alongside Robin van Persie.
âYes [we want Podolski], because we want to add some offensive strikers, because many times people say we rely too much on van Persie, which is true, but if we can find world-class players, we will [challenge for the title],â Wenger told the Daily Mail.
Itâll be music to the ears of all Gunners fans, but itâs fair to say they wonât believe it until they see it.
But itâll also get Arsenal fans wondering about how good this team, with a few added stars could be. They struggled early in the campaign following the departures of Nasri and Fabregas but have recovered to now sit in third. Wenger admitted that âweak periodâ has proven costly but looked at the bigger picture.
âI just felt we had two weak periods in the season and you can only afford one,â he said. âI knew when we were 17th [in August] that we cannot afford any weak periods anymore, so when that happened in January it was very difficult.
âIf you look at the circumstances of the [second] blip, it was down to the fact we had no full backs. Overall since October, since the team has gelled, we are not on too bad a run.
âMan City have had the opposite; they started in the way we are now. It is difficult for everyone to maintain that.â
