Napoli v Chelsea: 3-1
Chelsea were well beaten by an Ezequiel Lavezzi inspired Napoli team in the UEFA Champions League ‘Round of 16’ match as the London club surrendered an early lead to lose 3-1 in Naples.
Chelsea’s problems continued under manager Andre Villas Boas as the Blues are on a disappointing run of form as they have not won any of their last three games considering all competitions.
It was expected that last week’s FA Cup draw against Birmingham City would inspire them to put in a better performance against Napoli. And they did get the perfect start with Juan Mata’s goal inside the half-hour mark.
But Chelsea, who are yet to win a Champions League under Russian owner Roman Abrahimovich, surrendered the game after Lavezzi equalized in the 39th minute. And the first half was not yet over as Uruguayan hitman Edinson Cavani gave Napoli the lead in added time.
The second half saw Lavezzi complete his brace in the 65th minute which sealed a famous victory for Napoli. The Italian side have now beaten two English clubs in this season’s Champions League, the other team being Manchester City.
Chelsea will now have to put in a fantastic performance at Stamford Bridge in the second leg if they are to progress to the quarterfinals.
CSKA Moscow v Real Madrid: 1-1
In the other match, Real Madrid were pretty unlucky to draw their match against CSKA Moscow as their one-goal lead from the first half was levelled in late in injury time.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored from a left-footed volley off Fabio Coentrao’s cross to put Madrid in front. The La Liga leaders failed add more to their tally and paid the price for it eventually as Pontus Wernbloom equalized for Moscow in the 93rd minute.
Jose Mourinho’s side dominated the match and deserved the win. But Mourinho feels that this was ‘not a bad result’ while playing away from the Santiago Bernabeu. A win by a single goal in the second leg will seal a quarterfinal berth for the Spanish giants.
