EPL 2011-12: Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings (Spurs)

Brad Friedel – 7 The 40 year old American goalkeeper brought a bit of calm to the Tottenham defense.

Brad Friedel – 7 The 40 year old American goalkeeper brought a bit of calm to the Tottenham defense. Dealt well with high balls played into the area and distributed the ball well from the box. Could do nothing about the goals though.

Kyle Walker – 6 A good performance from the strongly built youngster at right back if we take into account his contributions in attack. However, his failure to pick up Samir Nasri while defending led to the match opener.

Younes Kaboul – 8 This man defended extremely well and had a game to remember personally. He could be extremely proud with his efforts at the back. Completely nullified the threat of Edin Dzeko in front of goal as he won every aerial duel that came his way.

Ledley King – 6 The Spurs captain looked good for most of the game, but his performance levels dropped as the game progressed and it was clear that he needs some matches to get back to his best. Brought down Mario Balotelli in the box deep into injury time and gave City a lifeline when the match looked to be headed for a draw.

Benoit Assou Ekotto – 7 Was a great performance defensively as he kept his man in check throughout the game and did everything well. However, we did not see the usual forward runs from the French born Cameroonian which was a disappointment.

Aaron Lennon – 6.5 Lennon was electrifying initially, but as the game went on, Gael Clichy recovered extremely well to mark him out of the game. However, he did bag an assist for Gareth Bale’s stunning goal.

Scott Parker – 8.5 Scott Parker was one of Tottenham’s best player on the afternoon in the middle of the park as he made some strong but legal challenges to thwart the City players. Lay his body on the line on several occasions for his team.

Luka Modric – 7.5 Did well more or less as the link between midfield and attack for Spurs. However, his passing was not as good as it normally is. His understanding with Jermain Defoe was not as good as it is with Emanuel Adebayor, who was ineligible for selection.

Gareth Bale – 8.5 The Welsh prodigy was very quiet in the first half, however, he made up for that with a brilliant goal in the second to level the scores at 2-2. Thereafter, Bale was at his best as he galloped forward with the ball on the left flank and crossed to Defoe in the 89th minute with the goal at his mercy, but the England international could not guide it into the net.

Rafael van der Vaart – 5 Had a poor game by his standards and did little. Had Harry Redknapp played another striker instead of the Holland international, it might just have paid off.

Jermain Defoe – 7.5 Looked lost up front playing on his own and screamed for someone to be beside him. Did well though to keep possession of the ball on most occasions as he scored a typical opportunistic goal. Would have rued missing the golden chance in the 89th minute though. Substitutes

Jake Livermore – 4 Misplaced passes in abundance. Did more damage than good.

Steven Pienaar – N/A Too little time to judge.
