After a very indifferent start to the season Celtic are finally turning things around and should keep their Europa League hopes alive on Wednesday.
Celtic face Atletico Madrid knowing that a win is probably required if they are to stand any realistic chance of progressing and, with heir excellent home record, a victory is entirely possible.
The SPL club would have been in a stronger position in Group I were it not for conceding a late equaliser to Udinese at Celtic Park, having already beaten Rennes 3-1 in front of their own fans, but it is now five consecutive wins in all competitions and Neil Lennon’s men will fancy their chances tonight.
Their opponents are the class act in this section but Atletico continued their horrendous recent away form when thrashed 4-1 in the Madrid derby by a rampant Real on the weekend and they concede goals for fun on their travels.
it is now eight matches without a victory on the road and having conceded 20 goals in that time, and scored just four, it is extremely surprising to see the La Liga outfit available at no bigger than even money tonight with the firms.
Beaten 2-0 in Udine and held 1-1 in Rennes, Atletico will certainly be happy with another stalemate to keep Celtic at arm’s length as they eye a place in the last 16 but might be pushed to achieve it with their hosts in such decent nick.
A 1-0 reversal at home to St Johnstone when struggling in August remains Celtic only defeat on home soil in the previous 12 months and they have enjoyed plenty of European success against some big names down the years.
At the prices, I am hugely against the Spaniards and I couldn’t put you off a small wager on Celtic either. Odds of 3.50 about a home win are just too big.
5pts Lay Atletico Madrid (vs. Celtic) @ 2.20 (Betfair) 1pt Back Celtic (vs. Atletico Madrid) @ 3.50 (various)
