It was another big defeat for Barcelona as they went down to Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara by a whopping 4-1 scoreline. The game played for the World Football Challenge at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami in Florida saw Barcelona take an early lead but were shocked with four goals by Chivas.
David Villa scored in the fourth minute to put Barcelona ahead 1-0 before Chivas scored four times in the second half. This was Chivas de Guadalajara’s first win in the competition and was set up by Marco Fabian’s twin-goals. More than 70k fans crammed in the stadium to watch the Mexican side stun the Champions League and Spanish la Liga winners.
Barcelona began with the early goal when Gerard Pique dodged the Chivas offside trap, and it ended with Villa putting the ball into the net. A hapless goal-keeper Luis Ernesto Michel could only look on.
It could have been 2-0 had the same tactic worked later, when Jona Dos Santos tried to repeat the feat, but Villa’s attempt hit the crossbeam and the scoreline remained the same.
It was in the 60th minute that Fabian began to weave his magic. He scored two goals in a span of a couple of minutes; the first was a bullet shot into upper corner which was followed by a pass from Omar Arellano launched into the net.
In the 71st minute then, Giovani Casillas made it 3-1 after he was allowed unmarked into Barcelona’s D. It was a huge defensive lapse and the Barcelona side were left with no chance to make a comeback. The fourth Chivas goal game in the injury time as José Luis Verduzco scored to round off a rout.
Barcelona have now played two matches in the World Football Challenge and have lost both their games. Real Madrid lead the points table with 17 points.
