While on one hand, Michael Schumacher has announced that he would not be taking his place in a Formula Car to mark his return, another great sportsman, this time a footballer, has said that he will take to the field again. >
43-year old Romario has stated that he would be coming out of retirement after spending over a year away from the football field. With 71 goals in 85 games for Brazil, Romario has decided to add to his tally of 1,003 goals at the professional level as he turns out for a second division team in Brazil’s football league, America.
Romario is currently the team manager for America.
In a career that lasted over 23-years, Romario was seen working his magic at places like FC Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven where, after playing with & against him, players like Michael Laudrup stated, “No one else could utilize my passes the way he did” and greats like Roberto Baggio said, “Romario is one of the greatest players of all time. He has good technique and personality. He is a master of art in the penalty area.”
“I’m getting fit and the federation’s authorisation should arrive next week,” said Romario. “I will play to make my father’s dream come true.”
The club released a statement confirming their manager’s decision to return to the field to make his comeback from retirement. >
“After taking a key role in the re-engineering of the club’s football, Romario will make his contribution on the field,” it read.
“We wish our beloved Romario all possible success. We expect that his huge goals collection - currently 1,003 - will increase soon.”
A player once described by Johan Cruyff as “A genius of the goal area”, Romario and America will be hoping that the former giant of Brazilian football will be back with at least some of his flair and knack for goal scoring.
After all, form is temporary while class is permanent.
