Carl Yarborough became the only NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver to win three consecutive championships. He completed this unique feat in 1978 and on his way, won 83 NASCAR Cup Series wins along with 70 pole positions. All these wins were a part of a career that lasted 40 years.

Yarborough's stats were magnificent: with 31,776 laps-led, he had the second highest tally of laps-led ever; He led 340 race and ran an incredible 171, 927 miles. A four-time winner of the Daytona 500, he also won the Southern 500 on an incredible 5 occasions. In 1984, his qualification speed for the Daytona 500 topped 200 mph, the first time ever a driver had managed to beat the 200-mark to get qualification. Naturally, he was on pole. For a single season's record, Cale holds 14 pole positions for 1980 and 5 consecutive wins in 1976 which still, till date, have to be surpassed.

Cale Yarborough was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993 and in the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame in 1994. In 1996, he was also inducted to the Court of Legends at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
