American great Tom Watson says golf should not become an Olympic sport due to the dilution it will have on Major Championships.
The 63-year-old, who won eight major championships during his prime years, spoke to reporters ahead of the Australian Open and insisted golf shouldn’t be played at Rio 2016.
“I don’t want to pour cold water on it but I don’t think it should be in the Olympic Games,” Watson said.
“I still think of Olympics as track and field and not golf, to be honest with you. We have our most important championships (the four majors).
“You have golf in the Olympics, you have diluted the importance, in a sense, of the four major championships.”
Golf will be played at the Olympics for the first time since 1904, in four years time in Rio de Janiero.
